Character
The main character is Trond Sander. He is extremely shy and reserved. All his life he has longed to live somewhere with absolute silence. Trond prefers to be alone and feels greatly imposed apon when someone else comes by. As a child and most likely as an adult as well, Trond was a born follower. His friend Jon was always the leader. Trond listened to Jon and followed his instructions. It is clear that Trond is a very reserved person even as a child because it is difficult for him to ask others personal questions. Trond overanalyzes everything. He considers the worst case sinerio for everything that involves risks. Trond focuses on the "what ifs" and "could have been".

Sara-
ReplyDeleteI think it is really interesting that you noticed that he focuses on the "What ifs" and "Could have beens." Personally, I think it could be because of the extensive amounts of time he now has to look back over his life- do you?

That is true. All he life really consists of listening to the radio. He's got quite a bit of spare time on his hands and to me it seems that a large part of this book will be Trond reflecting on his past
ReplyDeleteTo agree, he does have a lot of time on his hands and it leads to my question, do you think because of all his time with his father as a child and the isolated enviroment back then may have persuaded Trond into wanting to live such a simple and lonely life when he got older?
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea that you put forward of Trond being a "born follower". I think that it puts in him one of two places, either he is to dull to think of how to lead or he's along for the ride and will do whatever.
ReplyDeleteSara,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you saying that Trond was born a follower. You can really tell that Jon has most of the power in Trond and Jon's relationship. I also found the "focusing on the what if's and could have beens" part of your post very interesting as well for I had never really noticed that until now.
Like Alex, I agree towards the fact that Trond is a follower and I think its good that you included this in your blog because I think this is an important thing to know about Trond because when people are followers, they are often lead into some kind of trouble.
ReplyDeleteI really like your insight on Trond's character. I agree with you that Trond is a follower, and Jon is naturally a leader. Like Alex said, I never really took note that he thinks of "what if's" and "could have beens" until you mentioned it.
