Character
The main character in this book is Trond Sander. Trond is a type of person that I feel very familiar and comfortable with. He is very modest and is a thoughtful person. To me he represents the classic Norwegian Character that I have read about many times. Norwegians are known for their modesty and struggle to complain. I find this to be one of the most interesting traits he has. You can see that this trait is valued when Trond’s father told him to push the pain away when pulling the nettle from the yard. Another trait that I found in him was his simple and reasonable nature. The events that happen in his life never overwhelm Trond, but when there is a lot to be done he simply takes it one little challenge at a time. What makes me curious is the thought about whether or not Trond’s character will change throughout the book.

I had hardly even thought about the fact that Trond is Norwegian... you bring up a great point in illustrating his character! I can definitely see the "classic Norwegian" aspect of Trond's personality, he is content to let others take the spotlight and never puts himself first. It will be interesting to see if Trond is able to maintain his modest demeanor as we learn about the many challenges he has faced in his life.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great point! I am not sure how the book will make him change. At first I thought the change would maybe just change but your idea of maybe having him forced into the spot light is very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daria in saying that it puts Trond into a different light if you compare him with the Norwegian sterotype. It is also interesting how you brought up the point of the valuses of Trond's father and how Trond himself shares similiar values. I wish I could be more like the Trond you have described in the way that he stays calm and does what needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteNels,
ReplyDeleteyou made many great points in your post one of them being the classic norwegian character that you depict Trond as being. I totally agree with that statement, Trond is very modest and never really complains about what he has to do. I also agree with what you said about how you are wondering if Tronds character will change. It will be interesting to see whether or not this happens and how it may happen.
I like all of your points about Trond Sander and i like how you are noticing specific traits in him. I am also curious about if his his character will change throughout the book.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting to think about whether or not Trond's character will change as well. On one hand, the reader is ablebto see Trond both as a teenager and as an adult, so one can assume that since the two are very simmilar, he doesn't change much at all. On the other hand, we haven't seen Trond as a young adult or seen any life-changing events happen to him yet, so he could go through a complete transformation.
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting how you know what Norwegian people are like. I did not know they were modest and thoughtful. That must give you much more help in understanding Trond. I also do wonder the same thing as you, like if Trond will change over time.
ReplyDeleteNels I think that your comment was very interesting! You pointed out ideas that never crossed my mind, like how Trond is the average Norwegian person. This helps give me a better understanding about his character. I also like your thoughtful question about if his character will change or not.
