Character
The main character and narrator in Out Stealing Horses in Trond Sander, an older man in his middle sixties. Trond lives in a very secluded area in Norway. He lives alone with the exception of his dog Lyra. He only has one neighbor, Lars Haug, who he rarely sees. The first night they formally introduce themselves is when Lars loses his dog Poker. Trond is asleep when he hears the high pitched sound of a dog whistle. This brings him out of ned and leads him into the night. Luckily they find Poker. In the next chapter Trond has a flashback to the summers he spent as a teenager with his friend Jon. Trond only spent the summers in this cabin like places because during the school year he went back to Oslo. Trond's friend Jon would always have adventures planned out for them, which were sometimes even illegal. Trond would do anything that Jon told him to do so it seems that Trond's personality was that he was easily persuaded into doing things.

ReplyDeleteKali,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Trond would always do what Jon told him to. It seemed like Jon would always come up with the plan and Trond would just go along with it. He would do even illegal things, which shows he is easily persuaded to do things.

I agree with both Kali and Caitlin that Trond was the follower of the two. I would also like to give the example of when Jon crushes that birds nest and Trond doesn't have the guts to tell him to stop. I have a feeling Jon is controlling Trond to the point where Trond is afraid to speek his mind.
ReplyDeleteKali I understand what you're saying, and I agree. When he stole horses with Jon, which was illegal, he did it without question. He didn't even really need persuasion to get him to do it. He just did it without much thought. He only analyzes the situation after it's already happened.
ReplyDeleteI think Jon is trying to see how far he can go without Trond saying something and standing up for himself. Jon is like a little kid seeing how much he can do without his parents getting angry with him, he is testing his boundaries.
ReplyDeleteKal-
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Trond is easily influenced especially by his childhood friend Jon. I think those two will eventually get in huge trouble while doing one of Jon's "adventures". I agree with Scott that Jon enjoys testing boundaries and acts like a little kid.
Kali,
ReplyDeleteYour post was very descriptive. I like how in the last couple of sentences you bring up the point of how many of the things Jon and Trond end up doing are illegal. I also like how you added the point of how Trond is easily influenced by Jon. This adds to the point that he is very much a follower and not a learder.
