Question

At the beginning of the book, Trond claims his reason for moving to the country is because, "I need to concentrate" (7). Do you think Trond is being brave by moving, like he always wanted to? Or do you think he's just fleeing from the responsibilities of life?

  1. I definitely think that Trond is trying to escape his past by moving far from any city life whatsoever. I don't know if his move can necessarily classified as cowardly, though, as he is just responding to his introverted nature that has prompted a majority of the decisions in his life.

  2. I think he is trying to get away from his past. Moving to Norway is brave because he is returning to face his childhood. Even though he did not know he would see Jon's brother again he is still returning to a familiar setting that he associates with his childhood and the death of Jon's other brother.

  3. Sarah you mentioned that Trond moved because he felt he needed to concentrate. What do you think he needs to concentrate on?

  4. Good question,
I dont think he is being a coward I just think that he is making his life out to be perfect for alone time to think. From the story, we get a sense that Tronds life has been ful of heartbreaking moments, like his wifes death and his best friends death. So this life that he is living is just great for him to think to himself.

  5. First off, I think Trond is being brave by moving back to the country. That is where he will be reminded of his past, because the surroundings sound very similar. Secondly, to answer Sara's question, I think that Trond moved there purposely to concentrate on his past.

  6. To start off I would like to comment and say that I really liked what Daria said about Trond having an introverted nature, this is exactly what I first thought of Trond at the beginning of the book. Also I think that he is running away from his past and his fears but on the other and it is a strong and brave decision because he made it all by himself and there was no one there telling him what to do.

  7. I agree with Alexa. I think Trond is being brave and not trying to escape his responsibilities because he did move back to the country

  8. Sarah,
I don't think Trond moved to the country to be brave necessarily but more-so to take refuge and shelter from society. I think since he always had lived in a semi-isolated setting ,more-so at his cabin than at his real home as a kid, he just wouldn't be able to adapt to the hustle bustle of society. This is a really great question you brought up.

  9. I don't think it is so much a matter of being brave as the fact that Trond is retreating to his comfort zone. He is most comfortable isolated- I feel like his life would become overrun with responsibilities and stress if he lived in the city. Living in the countryside gives him a chance to reflect and take his life at his own pace, rather than the pace of everyone around him.

  10. I agree with Stacey that Trond is isolating self to get to his comfort zone. I think he wants to escape his past and reflect on it without the interruptions of other people. I also think that he retreats to the countryside to live the rest of his life in peace.

  11. I agree with Stacey, the move isn't about being brave or not. Trond isn't fleeing his old responsibilities because there are none for him. He has no family left and his wife has died. He was a sad man and just wanted to be reminded of a happier time, his childhood.

  12. I don't think that Trond is being brave by moving, I just think that he is moving to where he would most like to be.

  13. I believe Trond moving wasn't a sign of braveness. I think he just wanted to go back in time to when he had everything, his childhood. He though that if he moved to a place that resembled where he grew up, he would feel that same sense of happiness.
