Question

What do you think is the purpose of the flashbacks throughout the novel? Do they help explain Trond's character? Why or why not.

  1. I think the purpose of the flashbacks throughout the novel help explain Trond's personality. I think the flashbacks help shape Trond's character into what he has become as a man. In Trond's flashbacks, Trond is always following what other people have to say, especially Jon's ideas. If Jon did not come to get Trond and tell him what they were doing that day, Trond would keep to himself. And once he becomes older in the present time of the book, he still will listen to others, and keep to himself.

  2. Kali,
I think the purpose of the flashbacks throughout the novel are to add, like Alexa said, to the personality and character of Trond. The flashbacks are also definitley there to show us Tronds past and how he became who he was. Without the flashbacks this book would be a giant novel of confusion.

  3. I also think the purpose of the flashbacks is to explain Trond's personality. I think they are a way of showing the reader why Trond is the way he is. Also I think the flashbacks show how Trond came to live in the secluded area as a way from escaping his past. I think this novel would be very boring without them because his life as an old man is not very exciting, his life when he was younger is the exciting part.

  4. Personally I think that the flashbacks are the only thing keeping Trond sane. He lives alone in his house in the woods, with only his dog Lyra to keep him company. Trond has lived an eventful and sometimes frighteningly confusing life, and the frequent flashbacks help him to sift through the events.

  5. Well Kali, I do believe the flashbacks help explain Trond a little better but at the very beginning of the book is where I got to know Trond the best. The flashbacks to me are more stories about what he did than about who he is. I think the flashbacks are meant to give us a story because if there weren't any flashbacks there really wouldn't be a story.

  6. I also think the flashbacks serve to characterize Trond. I think it's interesting, Daria, that you believe they are keeping him sane- I never thought of that. Now that I think about it, he has nothing better to do than sift through his life's events, and perhaps remembering the past keeps him busier in his mind than fixing up his house, which is mundane work.

  7. I strongly agree with Daria. Trond is very lonely and only has is dog Lyra to keep him company. He has a lot of time to think and I think that he uses his flashbacks as entertainment and company.

  8. I think that the purpose of the flashbacks of the novel is to explain Trond to the reader. The only way to understand him is through his past. Personally I feel that the flashbacks tell the reader why Trond is so broken and alone in his old age. I also think that the flashbacks are more or less the main part of the novel since so much of what Trond does gets him thinking about his past.

  9. Kali-
I do believe the flashbacks are there to allow the reader to further understand why Trond has become the way he is. It definitely adds to Trond's personality. I feel that every flashback allows the reader to understand a piece of Trond's past we can link to his current personality and helps explain reasons for him becoming the way he is as a man.
