Character
The main character in the book Out Stealing Horses is Trond Sander. In the introduction of this novel Trond is a 67 year old man living in a cabin in Norway. Trond has a dog named Lyra who at the beginning of the book, seems to be his only friend. Trond seems to be a simple minded human being who just seems to enjoy himself. " Not that I should pass quickly or slowly, but be only time, be something I live inside and fill with physical things and activities that i can divide it up by, so that it grows distinct to me and does not vanish when I am not looking"(6). Trond seems like he is very content with his life as an elder man, having nothing to do but experience the nature around him with his dog. Trond flashes back to his childhood and reminisces on his horse stealing days. Trond has a friend named Jon who seems to be the leader of the two by the way he talks to Trond. Trond doesn't seem to be the type to express his mind to Jon because Jon will just pretend like he didn't hear it and move on, like when Trond says he is paralysed and Jon says back "I don't think so". Trond seems to be a pretty nice guy but I have a feeling that he will get himself in trouble because of his friend Jon and Jon's wild side.

ReplyDeleteDrew-
ReplyDeleteI like how you included the quote about time, as it is obvious that it is something that Trond values above many other things. Reading it again, I noticed that my focus was drawn to the last part, "does not vanish when I am not looking". This could be symbolic to the fact that he thinks his life previously had slipped through his fingers quicker than he had anticipated, and now is the time to cherish it.

Stacey-
ReplyDeleteThank you for the response and what you said about how his life had possibly slipped away is a pretty good possibility. Like I said at the end of my post, I have a feeling that Jon is going to be a bad influence on Trond in the future. I also wonder if the current situation of Trond living alone and in the wilderness is because of Jon and what they did when they were younger?
Drew,
ReplyDeleteI agree that Trond is very simple minded and I think that was a good quote you chose to represent what he values. I also agree with what you said about Trond and Jon. Jon is always the leader and Trond just goes along with what he says and that was also a good quote you chose to represent that.
Drew,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed that you remembered Trond's dogs name. I also am wondering how Jon's strong personality will be a detriment to Trond.
DREW!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that Jon is not someone who will help Trond make good choices. I think he will end up getting in to trouble while hanging out with Jon. I also like the quotes you chose to express Trond's personality. I feel they fit the situation well. The quote about time intrigues me, and I, along with Stace, think he will start to cherish life more at this point in his life.
Like Emily and Stacey, I also think he'll appreciate life more, because after so many years of such excitement, he has had a long, full life. && Jon and Trond share an interesting bond, and Jon is clearly "dominant." Trond trusts him more than himself. I'm interested to see what happens with those two... What are your predictions?
