Out Stealing Horses-Characters
The main character in “Out Stealing Horses” is Trond Sander. Trond Sander seems to be a very shy man and lives in a cabin surrounded by a desolate and beautiful wilderness. Trond Sander lives alone except for his dog Lyra and an old man that lives in a cabin near from him. “All my life I have longed to be alone in a place like this,” Says Trond which tells you that he has always wanted to live alone and Trond seems happy for where he lives. Trond Sander has a lot of time to think about what has happened in his life. Trond is a polite man and he does sacrifice precious sleep in order to help his neighbor find his missing dog. He begins to talk to his neighbor and this eventually leads into him telling us about his past that he happily forgotten. Trond Sander is very organized and a peaceful man after what seems to have been an eventful past. Also, when Trond was young, he wasn’t known as a leader, but he was known as a follower. His friend Jon was always the leader of the two and Trond would do and listen to whatever he said. This shows that Trond has always been a reserved person. Because Trond was a follower, I think this is what lead Trond into his eventful past.

David,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you how Trond was a follower and not a leader. It seems from Tronds stories from the past that he does what ever his father does and thats basically it. Also I liked how you stated that Trond likes the state at which he is in, you get that sense pretty strongly from what he does and says while living in his cabin.
I think it's interesting that you connected Trond's tendency to be a follower to him having an eventful past. I think that part of Trond's troubles (that we have yet to learn about) came out of the fact that he doesn't usually speak his mind, such as when Jon tells him that they are going to steal their neighbors horse. Trond knows that it is wrong, but he goes along with his friend anyways.
ReplyDeleteDavid,
ReplyDeleteI also thought that Trond seemed like a very quiet and reserved man. I agree that Trond was a follower not a leader. Jon would always make the plans and Trond would just go along with it even when it was illegal, which i agree could lead to his eventful past.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what everyone has said so far. Trond doesn't really have the courage to stand up for himself because Jon is very demanding and controlling. I really want to find out if Trond ever stands up to Jon or not. I have a hunch that Trond does because Trond is now 67 and we learned previously in the book that anyone caught stealing horses would be killed or hanged or something like that. So most likely Trond stood up to Jon but I would still like to know what is going to happen.

ReplyDeletehow would the fact that anyone caught stealing horses would be killed or hanged mean that Trond will stand up to Jon? Do you think that Jon will get hanged because Trond tells on him?
