Week Four Question

Do you think Trond and Lars will become closer with one another as the novel progresses? Why or why not.

  1. Good question,
I think that their relationship will. The only question is how and when. I wonder about this because the two of them when Lars first came out and told Trond that he knew who he was both didnt say anything after. It is going to be akward for ecah one to start there relationship that will have to be built on their past.

  2. I think Trond will help Lars to realize that it was not his fault that his brother died. It was just an accident. Lars will become someone Trond can trust and spend time with.

  3. I agree with what Austin said, I believe they will become closer but it is only a matter of time. It seems that both Trond and Lars are quiet reserved people so it will be difficult for one of them to make the move to jump start their relationship.

  4. I think that Trond and Lars will become closer with one another, because it is inevitable. It is more than a coincidence. Once Trond realizes Lars is the same Lars from his childhood he relates the situation to Dickens works of writting. Petterson writes, "when you read Dickens you're reading a long ballad from a vanished world, where everything has to come together in the end like an equation, where the balance of what was once disturbed must be restored so that the gods can smile again" (62).

  5. I also think they will become closer, but it will take a big move for one of them because they both are so reserved. I think Trond and Lars will find they have a lot in common because of trouble in their pasts. They have a lot of room to grow closer because of the akwardness the first time they met.

  6. To disagree with practically everyone who commented on this post, I definitely do not think that Trond and Lars will continue their friendship. I think that they are both very introverted characters who finally got the a piece of the past off their chests during their dinner meeting, but nothing more.

  7. Schwab,
I have a feeling that the relationship will last because I dont know who else would come into play if Jon left Trond's life. Jon eventually will end up leaving Trond because we see no signs of him at the beginning of the book when Trond is an older man. I have a feeling that Jon will get himself in trouble later in the book disconnecting Jon and Trond's relationship, but not for a while.

  8. Great Question. I think that they will because Trond will comfort Lars. Trond seems to have alot of feelings, he cares for Lars, they relate with their pasts, and Trond would like to stick with someone through his life because he doesnt really have alot of people to be with.

  9. I agree with most of you guys but with some exception. I think that the two will see more of each other and possibly have some sort of heart-to-heart conversations about Jon or the Death of Odd. But I believe it will end there because neither one of them is too interested in getting closer especially because if you think about where they live, the whole point of which is to get away from people.

  10. I agree with Nels. I don't think they'll become good buddies, but they will be more willing to talk about thought provoking things or get together for dinner once a week.
