Good Question, I think one of the defining moments in Tronds life is when he witnessed his father get into a "Strenght" battle between his father and Lars' father. Hi noticed how his father could like anyone els get caught up in a simple game of showing strength
I think one of Trond's most defining moments is in his past. When he was younger and Jon's brother had just died, John demolished a bird's nest along with all of the eggs, sending them crashing down to the ground. This event is important because he realized how fragile life is, and how easy it is to take it away. This event is brought up more than once in the novel.
This is a good question that can have many answers! I would have to agree with Austin that the strength competition was a defining moment because Trond had the chance to see a different side of this father. By showing off he was not being the usual quiet man.
For me, I think that Trond's invitation of Lars to dinner is one of his most defining moments in the novel. Though to an outsider's eye, two neighbors having dinner together seems like a normal occurence, it is much more. The two men have gone through so much together (Odd's death especially) but have never confronted the events of their past.
I really agree with Alexa that one of the defining moments is the crushing of the egg. He sees how easily a life can be taken away, and how quickly everything can get turned upside down. I also think that this locks in his tendency to have a few strong relations rather than many acquaintances, because with many acquaintances theres is a higher chance of getting hurt.
I too have to agree with Alexa and say that the death of Jons brother Odd was a defining moment. Even though this wasn't a defining moment in Trond's life it still would feel like it to him because Trond is a dear friend of Jon's. Jon's feelings, being responsible for the death of a loved one, kind of rubbed off on Trond when Jon crushed the helpless birds nest.
I believe the death of Jons brother, Odd, was a defining moment. It obviously left a mark on Trond's life given he still thinks about it as a man and analyses the situation.
