Why do you think that Trond decides to move to the rural countryside? Does he prefer to be isolated, or is he scared to not be? What is Lyra's significance in his life alone?
I think Trond moves to the rural area to escape his past and be isolated from others. I think he enjoys being alone. I think Lyra keeps him from being completely lonely because he finds her easier to interact with than humans.
I think that Lyra signifies Trond's sanity. She is the only thing in the way of him living in total isolation, and though he may not realize it, Trond depends on Lyra almost as much as she depends on him.
I definitely think Trond moved to a rural area to get away from people. He is not one to be social by any means. I really don't know what Lyra's significance is because she isn't mentioned a lot. I do think however, that Lyra will play a role later in the novel whether it may be foreshadowing or anything else like that.
Stacey, I can't totally figure out why Trond moves to the rural countryside but I do have a hypothesis. My hypothesis is that Trond moved to the rural countryside because that is the atmosphere he had pretty much lived in for the majority of his life; which leads me to my second point. I think Trond both prefers to be isolated because thats the way its always been for him, and I think he is scared to not be because, correct me if im wrong, but Trond has never really been the adventerous type but merely likes to keep things simple and unchanged. He never has really been able to go off on his own and think for himself as seen in many instances with Jon. Lyra's significance in his life is to simply act as a sort of human friend/companion but in dog form. I truly think that Lyra needs Trond almost as much as Trond needs Lyra.
I think that Trond becomes isolated simply because he likes to be away from people and he likes to be alone. But I totally agree with Caitlin, with the fact that he has Lyra in order to have a little company and thats why I think Lyra is so important in the book. Drew I also agree with you that Lyra will play a big role later in the novel.
I think Trond is isolated because he loves nature, and likes to be alone with it. I also agree that Lyra gves him company throughout the book. I disagree with the statement about Lyra becoming more important later in the novel, I think her sole purpose is to be Trond's companion.
I think Trond is isolated because he doesn't like to be with people. He likes to reflect and be alone. I think Lyra signifies his only link to others. He has that in common with his neighbor for example, and that links them together.
