I have been wondering this myself and would like to hear other people reactions, What was the point of the scene where Trond helps his neighbor find his dog? Does that have any significance? Is Petterson foreshadowing to something?
Drew, I think the point of the dog scene with Trond and Lars was simply to give the reader another alley-way into his personality. This scene showed us that Trond struggles socially and is pretty bad at small talk, but he is also willing to sacrifice valuable sleep to help out others. I think that Petterson could have possibly been foreshadowing the awkward relationship that Trond and Lars now share with one another.
Drew, I can see why you would want to know this, I was wondering the same thing! I also agree with Alex and David when saying that this scene could be used to help shape Trond's personality and also to show us, the reader, how not close Trond and his neighbor are from each other.
I also think it shows how Trond does not interact with people comfortably. I think this scene also shows the similarity between Trond and Lars because they both live very secluded and aren't used to interaction with other people. I agree that this will foreshadow Trond and Lars growing closer later in the book because of the similarities they share.
I was wondering the same thing after I read that scene. I agree with the others that Petterson put this scene into the book so that the reader could see more in depth, Trond's anti-social nature. This scene is the first scene from the book where Trond is talking to another person in the present. He didn't even know his neighbor's name, and he had been living in that house for a while.
I think that the scene with the lost dog is in the book because it connects Trond and Lars. Without this purposeful meeting Trond would have stayed away from Lars becuase there was no point for the two of them to get together. The scene offers some insight into Trond but it was nothing that the reader already hadn't inferred.
I believe the significance of the lost dog was to link Trond with lars. The only was he met Lars was because the dog was missing. Also, it allows a good moment for a flashback so we can learn more about Trond as a man.

I agree with Alex. The point of the dog scene was that he tries to make an effort to reach out, but he isnt that good at it.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was thinking as well but I just want to see this come back into play because I think that would be pretty cool.
