Since Trond was always such a reserved and lonely child, why did he choose to live all alone in his little house as an adult? How could he go through 67 years of life with such limited human contact without losing his sanity?
I don't understand that either. He seems to still be lonely as an adult. He is also still reserved. I think this makes it difficult for Trond to connect with other PEOPLE. Trond tries to counter his loneliness by spending time with his dog and listening to the radio.
I think that Trond enjoying being alone is just part of his personality. Also maybe because he was reserved as a child he doesn't know how to change that so he continues to live alone. I agree with Sara that he tries to counter his lonliness, but he only knows how to do that without human interaction.
Is the reason why Trond moved back to Norway is to be around fewer people? If someone feels awkward meeting new people and making first impressions, wouldn't it be easier to do so in a small town where there are fewer new people to meet? Or does a small town make meeting new people more difficult because everyone knows everything about everyone?
Good question, I think that as a kid, trond was raised in a Norweigen culture that made him only know about simplicity and quietness. This is probably why he chose to live alone as an adult because that is all he has known.
I think that it is apart of Trond's personality to be alone. Although it may seem like he is lonely, which he most likely a little, it also seems that he enjoys the peacefulness. He likes the calmness enough to kept him from sanity. This also makes me wonder if he sometimes talks to himself to keep himself company?
I think that its for sure apart of Trond's personality and has troubles connecting with people. I also think he uses his dog almost like a person and listens to the radio so he isnt completely cut off.
Daria, Since Trond was always such a reserved and lonely child, why did he choose to live all alone in his little house as an adult? How could he go through 67 years of life with such limited human contact without losing his sanity? I think Trond chose to live a reserved adult life even after living a reserved childhood because that is the way it had always been for Trond. I think if he would have tried to live in a more urban area he probably would not have been able to adjust and fit in with everyone.
I think the reason he doesn't lose his sanity is because of his dog, Lyra. Ever since his childhood, he only had few relationships with people. He is comfortable having few strong bonds as opposed to having many weaker bonds. He may be socially awkward, but that is another reason he may choose to live in the rural area that he does. He is so introverted that he is fine with being alone with his dog.
I just think that Trond is the kind of guy who can go through a day just thinking and taking things as they come. Trond isn't one to take action on something, he lets things come to him. That's why he keeps his sanity, because he is just a laid back guy. P.S. Like Stacey took 'socially awkard' from our cause and effect chart......
Throughout Tronds life, he has never had many people to interact with so he probably is use to quietness and he is probably not use to being with alot of people.
I think that Trond was able to overcome any loneliness any other person would feel, because Trond is a unique character. He enjoys his time alone to reflect on events from the past, and one thing that keeps him sain, is his routine. Almost everyday he wakes up, listens to the radio, cleans the dishes and then to change up that routine he will think about different events.
The lonely Trond that we meet at age 67 chooses to live alone because he is a broken old man. He has lost all the people that once brought him joy. He feels that there really isn't much to be said. I feel that the reason why he is sane at his age is not because he has a dog but because he knows that he has moved on to a new chapter in life. Also I believe that he wasn't always socially awkward.
